Just What Is a Dental Crown?

Also known as dental caps, a dental crown is a protective cover placed over your existing tooth or implant. The crown covers all sides of the tooth, down to your gum line.

How Does the Dentist Install Crowns?

At least two appointments are required for a tooth crown. If you need a root canal or other repair, additional treatment may be necessary beforehand.

During the first visit, the dentist makes an impression of the tooth. This is sent to a lab that produces your custom-molded cap. A temporary crown is added to your tooth at this time.

When the permanent cap is finished, you can come in for the dental crown procedure. Your temporary crown is removed, and the dentist attaches the permanent one and you’ll have a great-looking, durable tooth.

What are Some Kinds of Dental Crowns?

There are multiple types of tooth crowns, both pre-fabricated temporary caps and custom-made permanent crowns:

Temporary Crowns

You’ll likely get a temporary cap at your first visit. Made from stainless steel or plastic, these are adhered to the tooth to protect it from further damage until your permanent crown is ready.

Ceramic Crown

When you want a natural-looking front tooth crown, ceramic is an excellent choice. It features a porcelain-based filling, and the ceramic exterior matches the color of your other teeth.

These may require removal of some of the tooth structure for a better fit. In addition, the material is more prone to breaking under a hard bite. Otherwise, ceramic resists wear and tear very well.

Porcelain Crowns

When you want something very strong, consider porcelain fused onto a metal base. These metal crowns for teeth are very durable and stand up under pressure. These offer a tighter seal to keep food, saliva, and cavity-causing bacteria out. We’ll also need to remove some of the tooth structure to provide a better grip.
