Crowns in Sarasota, FL

Severe cavities can cause much damage. In fact, you may not be able to get a simple filling on a seriously damaged tooth. What can you do instead? One of our dentists may recommend a tooth crown for a tooth with major problems.

Just What Is a Dental Crown?

Also known as dental caps, a dental crown is a protective cover placed over your existing tooth or implant. The crown covers all sides of the tooth, down to your gum line.

There are multiple reasons to get a tooth cap, including:

  • Protection after a root canal
  • Preservation of a cracked or severely decayed tooth
  • Improved look for misshapen or discolored teeth
  • More secure dental bridges

Don’t want your tooth pulled? Most people with damage severe enough that a filling won’t be able to save the tooth can get a crown. Call our office today for an appointment.

How Does the Dentist Install Crowns?

At least two appointments are required for a tooth crown. If you need a root canal or other repair, additional treatment may be necessary beforehand.

During the first visit, the dentist makes an impression of the tooth. This is sent to a lab that produces your custom-molded cap. A temporary crown is added to your tooth at this time.

When the permanent cap is finished, you can come in for the dental crown procedure. Your temporary crown is removed, and the dentist attaches the permanent one and you’ll have a great-looking, durable tooth.

What are Some Kinds of Dental Crowns?

There are multiple types of tooth crowns, both pre-fabricated temporary caps and custom-made permanent crowns:

Temporary Crowns

You’ll likely get a temporary cap at your first visit. Made from stainless steel or plastic, these are adhered to the tooth to protect it from further damage until your permanent crown is ready.

Ceramic Crown

When you want a natural-looking front tooth crown, ceramic is an excellent choice. It features a porcelain-based filling, and the ceramic exterior matches the color of your other teeth.

These may require removal of some of the tooth structure for a better fit. In addition, the material is more prone to breaking under a hard bite. Otherwise, ceramic resists wear and tear very well.

Porcelain Crowns

When you want something very strong, consider porcelain fused onto a metal base. These metal crowns for teeth are very durable and stand up under pressure. These offer a tighter seal to keep food, saliva, and cavity-causing bacteria out. We’ll also need to remove some of the tooth structure to provide a better grip.

What Is the Cost of a Tooth Crown?

It depends on the type of crown you choose. However, the dental crown cost can be mitigated by dental insurance and discount plans. We may be able to help you with some options. Feel free to call about payment plans and the insurance we accept.

What Kind of Care Do Dental Crowns Require?

The typical lifespan of dental crowns is approximately seven years, but with diligent care, they can last for up to 40 years. Proper care requires brushing at least twice daily, flossing once daily, and getting regularly scheduled cleanings and dental checkups.
