Sink Your Teeth into the Facts About Wisdom Teeth Pain

dca-blog_tooth-extraction-wisdom-teeth

If your wisdom teeth are causing you trouble, you can ease the burden with wisdom teeth removal. The procedure provides rapid relief, and recovery is rather easy. Your dentist or oral surgeon should inform you about every part of the process, but here is a guide to help you through the procedure.

What You Should Know about Impacted Wisdom Teeth

The wisdom teeth are generally the last molars to appear, but they never come in at all for some people. But if they erupt incorrectly, they can cause disease and damage to your other teeth. If your dentist says you have impacted wisdom teeth, this means that those molars are trapped deep in the gums and may cause severe wisdom teeth pain or serious infections down the line. Experts recommend people have their wisdom teeth examined by age 20 to evaluate the development of these teeth. If the dentist sees a potential problem or impacted wisdom teeth, these molars can be easily removed. Extraction is a form of major surgery, but it is done routinely as an outpatient procedure with excellent results. Although general or local anesthesia is used to make wisdom teeth removal more comfortable, there may be some discomfort for the few days after the surgery.

How to Ease Pain and Speed Recovery after Wisdom Teeth Removal

Immediately following the extraction, your recovery process begins. Some people have little discomfort during recovery, while many feel fine after a few days, and others take up to two weeks to recover. It is normal to experience slight pain, swelling, or bleeding after wisdom teeth removal. There are many ways to aid your recovery, but these are the standard tactics:

  • Take it easy and rest for a few days after wisdom teeth removal.
  • Place an ice pack over the affected area to reduce swelling, inflammation, and pain.
  • Use over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers to ease any wisdom teeth pain during recovery.
  • After 24 hours, rinse your mouth with warm saltwater a few times each day to keep it clean and prevent infection.
  • Expect to resume many normal activities after the first day, but avoid strenuous activities for about a week to avoid affecting the healing process.
  • Stay away from caffeine, alcohol, soda, hot beverages, and cold drinks for the first few days after your surgery.
  • Choose soft foods like applesauce, cottage cheese, and yogurt for the first day, adding firmer foods as you feel comfortable.
  • Do not brush, floss, rinse, or spit for 24 hours. Once that period has passed, start brushing your teeth very gently again.

If you experience severe pain, fever, or other unusual symptoms, call your dentist or oral surgeon right away to prevent any problem from getting worse.
